Tapering off nortriptyline

I am currently on 30 mg of nortriptyline and I am considering tapering off. My VM symptoms are pretty well controlled (Stress and anxiety triggers… not food), and have been for months. I am wondering who has successfully tapered off and how slowly you went/ any side effects. I would love to see if I still need the medication, as I have gained a few around my middle and would like to see that go away! It isn’t severe by any means, but enough to make me feel not so great about myself. SInce my symptoms are undercontrol I think it is a good time to try… although I will admit being afraid of it coming back once I’m off the meds.

Hi, I can’t answer your question but just wondered how long you have been on these meds and what other meds you tried. It’s just I have mav and under Dr S which I will see Tuesday. Just feel awe full and on currently 450 mg of Pregabalin to help mav and before I am still taking 40 mg propranolol and 20 mg of Citalapram. Please help me and give me some light St the end of this tunnel.

Regards,

Ian

I have been taking Nortriptyline for about 6 months now ( I have only recently had an MAV diagnosis). Just 10mg, but that with lots of diet and lifestyle changes (including moving to a smaller house nearer to where I work!) has turned my world around after 16 years of misery and endless fruitless trips to various ENT specialists  . My current specialist said that you should only really take it for 6 to 12 months, and has suggested that I try and stop taking it after Christmas. I’m pretty worried about doing this, but will try and let you know how I get on. I would hate to go back to how I was before I started on it. I now feel great about 95% of the time, but this is only because I avoid most of the triggers I know affect me (chocolate, cheese, msg, caffeine, late nights, too much stress, excessive travelling, shopping centres).

SpinningJo, I am curious if you tried tapering off your Nortriptyline and how that went.

I have been taking 10mg every night for 4.5 months now. The symptoms aren’t totally gone- mostly a little noticeable when I make a sudden movement or too many repetitive movements- but when I tried taking 20mg, it did not help and actually made it a little worse. The 10mg has been very helpful- I’m now able to go about my life, whereas before being diagnosed, I couldn’t get through a day of work.

Anyway, I’m 30 years old and thinking ahead to having children- knowing I should get off of meds before becoming pregnant. I’m very nervous about not taking the medication and how to possibly function if I have to stop taking it due to pregnancy at some point in the next few years.
