Both migraine and motion sickness may be due to low brain levels of serotonin

Robin L. Brey, MD

"Scientists believe that low levels of a brain chemical called serotonin may make people susceptible to developing migraine headaches. Many people with migraine also have a problem with motion sickness, but it is not clear why this might be. We know that many drugs to treat motion sickness increase brain levels of serotonin, an important brain chemical. It is possible that low brain levels of serotonin may also be responsible for motion sickness. In this issue of Neurology, Drummond reports on a study that evaluated whether low brain levels of serotonin trigger motion sickness in people with and without migraine."

Is perscription medication required to raise serotonin levels or can it be done some other way? What kind of doctor treats mirgraine-associated vertigo?

That's interesting - I'd also like to know if there are any medications you can get without prescription that raise the serotonin level!

Welcome Benjilock,

Yup, there is. You can try 5-HTP or St John's Wort. If you go with SJW, pick up the Kira brand. Both are available for a really cheap price at www.iherb.com. I tried both with no luck in terms of migraine control. Both lifted my mood however.
